During isolation, some people maintain (or have adopted) the habit of physical activity outdoors, running or walking on the beach, for example. This is because, in principle, in this way, it would be possible to maintain a distance of 1.5 to 2 meters from other professionals, which is recommended to avoid contamination by the coronavirus.
However, a recent European study revealed that this minimal gap indicated in Covid-19 prevention may not apply to people on the go. A simulation by scientists in Belgium and the Netherlands showed that by walking or running, an individual can exhale or inhale micro-droplets containing viruses in a much larger radius, up to 10 meters. European research also pointed out that the higher the exercise speed, the greater the distance that should be kept to avoid contact with the particles.
This means that if the person has an asymptomatic carrier of SARS-CoV-2, they can spread the virus over a much larger area. Just as physical activity practitioners are also at increased risk of infection because they can enter “clouds” that contain suspended coronavirus (the virus would survive up to 3 hours suspended in the air, according to studies in the United States).
The infectious disease specialist at Unimed Vitória Rubia Miossi points out that the recommendation remains the same: those who can stay at home, not go out, or even perform physical activities outdoors. “The ideal is to exercise at home. It is much safer for everyone. With flu symptoms, even if they are mild, they don’t come out,” he recommends.
Some people also choose to wear a mask during outdoor physical activities. But the doctor cautions that this is also not indicated. “The mask can create breathing difficulties at the time of exercise and cause discomfort or even fainting, in some cases.” For this reason, the specialist reinforces: “The correct thing is not to practice any activity outside the home.”
Rúbia Miossi emphasizes that the main security measure at this pandemic moment is the maximum possible distance between people. “It is the best way to stop the virus from proliferating.”
