The new crisis between the president. Jair Bolsonaro and the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Sergio Moro, represents a “breath” for the mayor, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), who had been a frequent target of the Bolsonar militancy on social networks.

The clash between the head of the Executive Branch and the former judge of Lava Jato was viewed with concern by the leaders of the Centrão, who were on an approach route to the Planalto Palace.

According to sources, Maia had evaluated, in reserved conversations, that the crisis between Bolsonaro and Moro could hinder the movement of some of his allies to compose a government base in the National Congress.

The perception is that Bolsonaro does not face his most popular minister in a time of pandemic. The president’s performance during the coronavirus crisis has been poorly evaluated in the investigation, and the decision to remove Luiz Henrique Mandetta from command of the Ministry of Health has not been positively assimilated by the majority of the population.

With the new internal crisis, Maia’s allies believe that the pressure against the mayor on social media should temporarily decrease, which should give him room to breathe to rescue allies who were tempted to embark on the Bolsonar government. With that, sources evaluate, the DEM member of parliament could once again have more control over the voting agenda, without being seen as “the owner of the ball.”

Among Centrão leaders, the fear is that Bolsonaro will be “unfair” after having promised to distribute positions among the group’s parties. However, the eventual withdrawal would not be surprising, according to lawmakers, as the president has already breached agreements with the group at other times during his tenure.

In this scenario, the idea is that the approach with the government is made with “caution”. One of the fears is that Bolsonaro will give up continuing to flirt and will expose them on the networks, affirming to his followers that the resumption of relations was only progressing in the interest of the parties in office.
