For the first time since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of people considered cured in a 24-hour period in Italy was greater than the number of new cases registered.

The number of people recovered increased from 54,543 to 57,576 between Wednesday and Thursday (23), a difference of 3,033. In the same interval, 2,646 new cases were confirmed.

The number of new cases was also lower than in the previous 24 hours, when 3,370 had been announced by the Civil Protection Agency.

In addition, the number of Covid-19 operators in the country fell for the fourth consecutive day. This Thursday, 106,848 people registered as still ill, while on Wednesday they were 107,699.

The death toll increased slightly, from 437 yesterday to 464 on Thursday. The total in the country, since February 21, amounts to 25,549. Italy is the second country in the world with the most deaths from coronavirus, behind the United States.

In total, the country has totaled 189,973 cases since the start of the pandemic, the third largest number in the world, behind the United States and Spain.

Also according to the Civil Protection Agency, there was also a decrease in the number of patients admitted to intensive care between Wednesday and Thursday, following a trend of several days. The reduction went from 2,384 to 2,267.

According to Reuters, the civil protection unit first released data on how many people had been tested for the virus so far in Italy, bringing the number to 1,053 million in a population of about 60 million.

Previously, the agency had only released data on the material collected for testing. That’s a much higher figure, 1.58 million as of Thursday, because many people take the test two or three times.
