SAO PAULO – The number of applications for unemployment benefits in the United States last week was 4,427 million, slightly below the average expectation of financial market economists compiled in the Bloomberg consensus, which pointed to 4.5 million applications .

In the prior week, the result was revised slightly downward, from 5,245 million orders to 5.24 million. In five weeks, the total number of claims for unemployment benefits was 26.4 million.

Thus, despite the drop of more than 800,000 orders compared to previous weeks, job losses in recent weeks have already exceeded all job gains since the 2008 financial crisis.

The figure was the most expected this Thursday (23), because the increase in applications for unemployment benefits gives a palpable dimension of the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic in the richest country in the world.
