Real Sociedad is the great champion of the Copa del Rey for the 2019-20 season. Today, coach Imanol Alguacil’s team won the Basque classic against Athletic Bilbao 1-0 at the empty Estadio Olímpico de La Cartuja, Seville, to take the title. Oyarzabal scored the only goal of the match.
The two clubs preferred to postpone the final of last season until today with the idea of having fans in the stadium. However, the decision was not attended by the public due to the situation of the coronavirus pandemic in Spain.
Real Sociedad will only have the title for two weeks, since the final of the Copa del Rey 2020-21, between Barcelona and Athletic de Bilbao, is scheduled for April 17.
The first part of today was cut short, with few clear chances of scoring on both sides. The second stage, on the other hand, was more crowded.
In the 13th minute of the second half, Íñigo Martínez pushed Portu into the area. The referee gave the penalty and sent off the Athletic defender. After reviewing the VAR, the penalty was kept, but the red card turned yellow.
In the collection, Oyarzabal displaced goalkeeper Unai Simón and opened the scoring for the Society.
The goal secured the title for Real Sociedad, which had been without a major title for more than 30 years. The “drought” ended right in the final against the biggest rival.
