This Wednesday (3/17), the Chamber of Deputies overthrew President Jair Bolsonaro’s vetoes on the “anti-crime” package. With that, some of the 25 provisions of the law vetoed in 2019 can be restored. Senators have yet to confirm the decisions.
The parliamentarians returned the section that triples the penalties for crimes against honor committed or published on social networks. Another restored device was the one that guarantees the validity, for the defense, of the recording or listening made by one of the interlocutors without prior knowledge of the police or the Public Ministry. In addition, the crime of a qualified crime of homicide committed with a restricted or prohibited firearm, such as rifles, was resumed.
The measures were taken after an agreement between the party leaders and the government. In a session of the National Congress, the presidential vetoes on nine bills were revoked.
One of the vetoes contemplated by the Chamber refers to the current Budget Guidelines Law. Restrictions on transfers from the Federal Government to municipalities in arrears with up to 50,000 inhabitants and the completion or expansion of works in the private sector have been reduced.
The deputies also revoked the veto on the bill that provides compensation of R $ 50,000 to front-line Covid-19 professionals who are permanently disabled after the disease.
Another point addressed was the competence of the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) to define the use of the resources obtained from the Federal Program of Payment for Environmental Services (PFPSA). The veto to the National Registry of Payment for Environmental Services (CNPSA), which controls payment contracts for environmental services, was also rejected. With information from Agência Brasil.
