The population misses the dictatorship, says Club Militar after the Silveira case – 02/20/2021

After the Chamber confirmed the detention of deputy Daniel Silveira (PSL-RJ), detained by decision of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), Clube Militar published a note with “reflections” on the case. In the document they questioned the detention and said that “a large part of the population” missed the period of the military dictatorship (1964-1985).

“Why do the distinguished Ministers of the STF think that supporting the Military Regime that was established in 1964 is a crime when a large part of the population loses that moment? The democracy that we have today in Brazil began in 1964 …” questioned a note published on the club’s website. (see the full text below).

The document is signed by the president of the institution, Eduardo José Barbosa, general of the reserve.

According to a Datafolha poll in June last year, for 78% of the population, the military regime was a dictatorship. Support for democracy, on the other hand, reached 75% of respondents in an institute survey.

At the beginning of the text, Clube Militar informs that it will reflect and will not enter into the merit of the words pronounced by Daniel Silveira.

The document questions “why other similar pronouncements by center-left politicians and journalists are not treated as an unreliable crime” and considers that Supreme Minister Marco Aurélio Mello “threatened the deputies.”

“Why did Minister Marco Aurélio threaten the deputies saying that if the prison of Deputy Daniel Silveira was relaxed they would render accounts to the people at the polls in 2022? Who informed the illustrious minister that the population supports the arbitrariness of the STF?” Question the document.

The arrest of Daniel Silveira was decreed by Minister Alexandre Moraes, of the STF after a video published on social networks with attacks and offenses against the court and the ministers. Moraes justified the act on the spot by the fact that the conduct was recorded and available on the internet.

In the club note there are questions about Adelio’s experience. President Jair Bolsonaro, during the 2018 campaign, was attacked with a knife by Adelio Bispo de Oliveira. Last year, the president and the MPF (Public Ministry of the Federation) did not appeal the process that found the irresponsible stabber and this process ended.

Dictatorship in Brazil

According to a study by the National Truth Commission, in a report concluded in 2014, 434 deaths or disappearances were identified during the dictatorial period. Of this total, 191 dead were identified, 210 were considered missing and 33 missing, whose bodies were later located.

The commission’s analyzes considered cases of leftist militants and state officials during the dictatorship.

Military club

The military club was founded on June 26, 1887 and is aimed at military personnel of the Armed Forces, on active and reserve duty, and their families.

Despite the statements about the Daniel Silveira case, the club’s bylaws define what the member has the duty to do: “refrain from promoting, in the Club, any manifestation with a character of political, religious or discriminatory proselytism of any kind.”

The statutes, for their part, consider that the club “will continue to be unfamiliar with issues of religion, party politics or discrimination of any kind, and the transfer of its facilities to meetings that are intended to deal with such matters is prohibited.”

Without going into the merit of the words addressed to the members of the STF, by Deputy Daniel Silveira, here are some reflections:

1. Why are other similar pronouncements, even made by center-left politicians and journalists, not treated as a crime?

2. Why are open threats against the life of the President of the Republic not treated as an atrocious crime?

3. Why does freedom of speech apply only to those same center-left individuals?

4. Why are these alleged crimes committed by sympathizers of the president a high priority in the investigations, while crimes committed by ideological allies or complaints against the STF ministers themselves go without investigation or awaiting prescription?

5. Why did Minister Marco Aurélio threaten the deputies, saying that if deputy Daniel Silveira’s prison was relaxed, they would render accounts to the people, at the polls, in 2022? Who informed the illustrious minister that the population supports the arbitrariness of the STF?

6. Why do the distinguished Ministers of the STF think that supporting the Military Regime that was established since 1964 is a crime when a large part of the population loses that moment? The democracy that we have today in Brazil began in 1964 …

7. Why are those supported by the Judiciary still the criminals already convicted? Most of them, as long as they can support the best lawyers, will never serve their sentences, and can even take trips outside of Brazil, while those who use their language to speak cannot even leave home (those on the right, for course)).

8. Why aren’t Adelio and his allies’ equipment tested?

9. Finally, without mentioning dozens of other examples, does the crime propagated by the STF and its left allies refer to verbal threats, or, in reality, is it because the accused is a supporter of the one chosen by the people to govern? Brazil?
