Santos wins in Vila, returns to the G8 and moves Corinthians away from Libertadores

Current runner-up, Santos took an important step towards qualifying for the next edition of the Copa Libertadores. Tonight (17), Peixe beat rival Corinthians in Vila Belmiro, 1-0, and regained eighth place in the Brazilian Championship. Defeated in the São Paulo classic, Timão parked in the center of the table and sees his place in the continental tournament increasingly difficult.

The first half of the game was not the best. Right after 11 minutes of play, a drop in power transmission thwarted Santos and Corinthians’ plans and the game was paralyzed for 12 minutes. In the final stage, the duel was more exciting, especially due to the individual performance of the Venezuelan Soteldo, directly responsible for Peixe’s victory, in a delayed match, valid for round 33 of the competition.

With the victory, Santos reached 53 points in the classification table and consolidated himself in the G8, a position that today would guarantee a place in the next edition of Libertadores. Corinthians, meanwhile, is left with 49 points, with only two days remaining for the Brazilian’s final, in a complicated mission to overcome the executioner.

Soteldo unbalances in Vila

Saved by a muscle pain in his thigh, Soteldo started on the bench. But, with the performance well below the team, it was unleashed already at halftime, in the vacancy of midfielder Ivonei. He came in and changed the game almost immediately. Nine minutes were enough for the Venezuelan to find space, risk his shot and, on the rebound, see Santos find the goal. The adolescent Marcos Leonardo was the one who consecrated himself. Soteldo was removed from the team due to attrition, just 17 minutes later. He fell down and asked to be replaced and, just in case, they responded to him.

Corinthians attack disappoints

Stable as a Corinthians forward, Léo Natel practically did not produce on the field. Even when his team was better in the first minutes of the classic, before the blackout, the forward hardly appeared. Throughout the game, he killed the attack and gave no options. Without effective participation in the match, Natel was replaced by Jô at the beginning of the second half, but the substitute did not respond either.

Blackout in Vila Belmiro

The São Paulo classic had to be interrupted 11 minutes into the first half due to lack of electricity. The rains in the city of Santos hit the transmission system in Vila Belmiro and the lights were off for 12 minutes until the power was restored.

Sleepy first time

The power outage at the beginning of the first half had a negative impact on the match. Neither Santos nor Corinthians managed to develop a good football and the game was stagnant in the middle of the field, without dangerous plays from either side. At the end of the first 45 minutes, just two shots on target and very little emotion.

Soteldo and Peixe advance

The Venezuelan was on fire in the game. He received the ball on the left side of the attack, put it in and hit it. Cássio stretched everywhere to make the defense, distributed the ball to one side of the area. The Corinthians defense did not follow the play and let forward Marinho take the rebound completely free. Ponta do Peixe simulated submission and passed it to Marcos Leonardo, inside the area, to score.

Corinthians tries to react, but fails

At a disadvantage on the scoreboard, Corinthians tried to launch the attack and seek the result in Vila Belmiro. Coach Vagner Mancini sent Gabriel Pereira, Mateus Vital and Jô into the offensive system. Even with the changes, Timão could not offer danger and was defeated by Santos away from home.

Upcoming matches

Santos returns to the field next Sunday (21), at 6.15pm (Brasília), to face Fluminense. The game will be played in Vila Belmiro. Corinthians, meanwhile, host Vasco, at Neo Química Arena, the same day, at 6 in the afternoon.
