Accused of executing a scheme of active and passive corruption, money laundering and criminal organization, the former mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Crivella, had his house arrest revoked by the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Gilmar Mendes.

The decision was presented by the president of the STJ, Minister Humberto Martins. To obtain the release, the former mayor must meet several conditions, such as not leaving the country (he must deliver his passport within 48 hours to the Federal Police), not keeping in touch with others investigated in the process, and appearing in court to report and justify activities.

Despite revoking the house arrest, Gilmar Mendes had denied the request for habeas corpus filed by Crivella’s defense, requested last month.

Crivella stops using the electronic anklet the one placed on December 23rd. He was detained on December 15 at the joint of the Civil Police and the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro. The former mayor spent a day in the Benfica building in Rio, but he went to the local regime by decision of the STF.

Investigations into Operation QG for Tipping, which culminated in Crivella’s preventive detention, began last year, following the winning collaboration of money collector Srgio Mizrahy, detained by Operation Cmbio, Desligo. The amounts involved remain confidential.

According to the investigations, businessman Rafael Alves received checks from entrepreneurs to mediate in the closing of contracts with RioTur or to enable the payment of debts of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro with them.
