President Jair Bolsonaro (no party) said that the extension of the emergency aid “is almost certain, we still don’t know the value” and that the aid must be delivered for another three or four months. The federal government has yet to set a start date for the new round of payments.
The statement was made in an interview with TV Mirante, a TV Globo affiliate in Maranhão, after an event this Thursday (11). Bolsonaro traveled to the state to participate in a ceremony for the delivery of rural property titles in Alcântra.
“It’s almost certain, we still don’t know the value. Certainly, from … certainly, it may not be March. From three to four months, it is being agreed with the Executive and Parliament also because we have to have fiscal responsibility, “he said.
The extension of emergency aid, initially ruled out by the government’s economic team, is a reason for pulse and pressure from parliamentarians with the advance of a second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country. Arthur Lira (PP), the new mayor, and Rodrigo Pacheco (DEM), who assumed command of the Senate, argue that the government should extend the aid.
This is because the new increase in cases of the new coronavirus should delay the recovery of the economy and the labor market. According to a survey by the media consortium, eight states have an increase in the moving average of deaths from Covid -19 on Thursday.
The official government proposal to renew the aid is still unknown, but the market is already reacting negatively to the hypothesis that new spending will be created outside of the spending ceiling and without cutting other disbursements in return.
“Emergency aid is expensive for Brazil, it is a huge debt for Brazil. […] However, it is not enough to just grant one more period of emergency aid, trade has to start working again. We must end this story of “closing everything”, we must take care of the elderly who have more comorbidities, the rest have to work, “said Bolsonaro.
The president warned about the risk of over-indebtedness in the country, with results ranging from loss of credit to inflation. “Here comes the chaos and nobody wants it there,” the president said in an interview with reporter Sidney Pereira. Therefore, one of the hypotheses is that the payment will return to only half of the beneficiaries in 2020.
“The name is an emergency, it cannot be eternal because it represents a very large indebtedness of our country, and nobody wants the country to break up,” Bolsonaro said shortly before, during a speech at the ceremony.
The emergency aid was paid last year to informal workers, due to the pandemic, in installments of R $ 600 and, later, of R $ 300.
