The British government said on Thursday (11) that a new mutation of the coronavirus, known as the Bristol variant, can infect people who have had Covid-19 or who have already been vaccinated against the disease.
According to the UK science group advisor for emergencies, it remains to be seen whether the Bristol variant is more transmissible than the previously identified British variant.
The country’s health minister said the UK is committed to improving detection of infected people and increasing testing to monitor the spread of the new variants.
The British public health service reported that the cases identified in Bristol share the same mutation recorded in variants in South Africa and Brazil.
Scientists say the vaccines are effective against variants of the virus so far, but mutations can decrease the effectiveness of immunizers.
