The appearance of hundreds of balls in the sand strip of Peruíbe, coast of São Paulo, intrigued the inhabitants of the region. This weekend, the photos of the beach circulated through WhatsApp groups and were echoed on social networks. The main questions of the population seek an explanation of what would have been and what could have caused the phenomenon.
“Man, I was running when I saw these things in the sand. I thought they were some animal eggs … I don’t know,” IT tech Gilberto Rodon said. “A friend had the courage to work there. ‘It’s mud.’ Then we were more relaxed,” he continued.
Tour guide Yarima Ferreira was surprised to notice the balls in the sand. “It was an unusual appearance. There never happened to be balls like this. In recent months, there has only been the normal appearance of mud on the edge, but not in that way,” he said.
Yarima explained that the city has many mangroves and that it faces frequent rains. “The waters of the river end up carrying sediment to the sea. And there is a bag of mud in the high seas, which last Thursday, with the stormy sea, due to the cyclone, ended up bringing even more sediment to the coast,” he said. explained.
The justification for the mysterious dances was confirmed by the Municipality of Peruíbe. The city’s Secretary of the Environment, Eduardo Ribas, explained that the phenomenon is nothing more than black mud wrapped in sand.
The manager also said that the pockets are located 80 meters from the beach and that when the sea is rough, there is a “blender effect” that lifts the mud. The suspended and moving mud, touching the sand results in these balls, he added.
The biologist Gemany Rosa, from the Biopesca Institute and resident in Peruíbe, reiterated that the balls are a normal phenomenon. “After heavy hangovers, these mud and sand acorns are common,” he said.
