THE The rupture of a Himalayan glacier left hundreds of people dead in India after their homes were affected by a flood on Sunday morning (7). “The actual number has yet to be confirmed, but an estimated 100-150 people died,” Om Prakash, Uttarakhan’s chief secretary of state, told Reuters.

After that, India also put many of its northern districts on high alert. Officials said that people living in villages in these areas are being evacuated due to rising water levels in a river supplied by the glacier.

The Uttarakhand region is subject to flash floods and landslides. In June 2013, the rains caused flooding that killed some 6,000 people in the region.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he is in constant contact with authorities to find out about the rescue work. He also said that the country was praying for the safety of all residents of the region.
