The DEM released the vote of its bench in the election for president of the Chamber of Deputies. With that, the deputies of the acronym will be able to vote for the candidate of their choice. The decision was taken unanimously by the party’s executive, after a meeting held on Sunday night (31). The congressional election takes place this Monday (1st).
“In a meeting held on Sunday (31), the Democratic National Executive decided to assume an independent position in the election process of the Board of Directors of the Chamber, without formalizing support for any of the blocks,” said the acronym in a press release. release. “The definition was taken unanimously by the members of the Executive, with the aim of preserving the unity of the party,” he added.
The acronym meeting was called by the party’s national president, ACM Neto. The decision represents a defeat for the current President of the Chamber, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), and for his candidate, Deputy Baleia Rossi (MDB-SP), who had the support of the DEM. On the other hand, it represents a victory for Arthur Lira (PP-AL), Centrão leader and candidate supported by the Planalto Palace.
The DEM has 31 deputies with mandate in the Chamber. They only lose to PT (53) and MDB (33) and draw with PSDB (31). The party leader in the Chamber is Deputy Efraim Filho, from Paraíba.
Party returned on the eve of the elections
The DEM’s decision was made on the eve of the elections and represented a setback. The party even announced its support for Rossi’s candidacy, but over the course of the campaign, several names linked to the acronym came to support the ruling candidate Arthur Lira (PP-AL).
One of the main exponents of the movement against Rossi was the deputy Elmar Nascimento (DEM-BA). He is one of the main leaders of the party and he felt betrayed by Maia, who did not support his candidacy and preferred to support Rossi, who is from the MDB.
With the party divided, the DEM executive decided to free her seat to vote as she sees fit, which favors Lira, who is the favorite to win the elections.
