An extraordinary call for a legislative session in the National Congress has been gaining more and more details in the last week. It turns out that several senators are supporting the idea of ​​extending the benefit in 2021 in order to mitigate the economic impacts caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

In order to hold an extra-legislative session to address the issue, Senator Alessandro Vieira submitted a request for a new meeting to be held. The proposal is to debate the extension of the state of public calamity and emergency aid and the vaccination process in the country, at the moment the senator will collect signatures so that the request is presented to the Bureau.

In March of last year the state of public calamity of the country was decreed. However, the deadline ended on December 31, 2020, and its completion makes it difficult for the Federal Government to adopt emergency social assistance measures.

The parliamentary recess will continue until February 1, but the Constitution allows an extraordinary convocation, by a majority of the members of the two legislative chambers in case of urgency or relevant public interest.

In addition, another senator, Rodrigo Cunha (PSDB-AL), understands that there is urgency and that Congress needs to take a position and discuss emergency issues related to the pandemic. He also confirmed that he signed the application.

“Another point to which Brazil must devote its attention is the necessary extension of measures that help our country’s companies,” he said.

In addition to him, Senator Plínio Valério (PSDB-AM) also affirmed that he signed the request for an extraordinary session. For him, the number of deaths per day is “appalling” and there is already the risk of a third wave in August, if there is no general vaccination. Regarding emergency aid, he warned about the need to discuss terms and sources of financing.

The Secretary for Economic Policy, Adolfo Sachsida, declared that the extension of emergency aid in 2021 it could worsen the situation of the poorest. The statement was given in an interview with CNN.
