In an interview with Bom Dia Santa Catarina this Friday morning (15), the president of the entity, Paulo Weiss, said that the idea was always to prioritize a national plan, that is, the purchase by the municipalities was a ‘plan B ‘. Fecam was the first entity in the country to carry out this type of negotiation, motivated by the delay of the federal government in establishing a deadline for the start of vaccination, and by the initial refusal of the Ministry of Health to include Coronavac – prepared by the Butantan Institute in alliance with the Chinese company Sinovac – in the national immunization program.

Internally, the assessment was that the move had a positive result. With the movement initiated by Fecam, 184 mayors of the country sought out Butantan to close agreements to purchase vaccines, including capital cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba and Belo Horizonte. Another 10 associations also attended the institute, which totals around 1,000 cities.

Pressure from municipalities and most of the Brazilian states played an important role in changing the attitude of the federal government, which withdrew from Coronavac and expedited the presentation of the National Immunization Plan. The expectation is that the vaccination begins on Wednesday (20).
