The New Year’s Eve celebration ended with a bomb on the popular Riviera de São Lourenço beach, in Bertioga, on the north coast of São Paulo.
Breaking a municipal decree, hundreds of young people occupied the beach for an illegal luau celebrating the arrival of the new year.
The festivities continued into the early hours of Friday (1st).
The images circulating on the Internet show that the regulars were overcrowded and few wore a mask, an element of mandatory protection throughout the state of São Paulo.
The same images also captured many fights among the regulars, who drank a large amount of alcohol and promoted “little parties” on the beach with a loud sound.
Bertioga had banned access to the beaches – including a stretch of sand, gardens, and boardwalks – from 7:00 p.m. on December 31 to 7:00 a.m. on Day 1 to contain crowds, an important measure to contain Covid-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus.
Vacationers staying in apartments along the boardwalk videotaped the riots and called the military police.
The PM troop says they called her around 2 am. In line and following protocols to disperse crowds, the corporation began throwing tear gas canisters on the sand of the beach.
The videos show that as soon as he moved through the arena, the troops dropped new bombs.
Through the Doria administration’s Public Security Secretariat (PSDB), the prime minister said he was harassed and received with stones, bottles and pieces of wood thrown by bathers.
“It was necessary to use ammunition with less offensive potential to disperse the crowd. There were no reports of injuries or arrests,” the prime minister said in a statement.
According to the corporation, at least 1,160 suspects, 333 of whom were wanted by the courts, were detained in the state of São Paulo throughout 2020 in the Peace and Protection operation, which seeks to stop fights and crowds.
The same action also resulted in the seizure of 534 irregular vehicles, 1.25 firearms and 1.3 tons of drugs, in addition to 3,238 traffic reports.
The luau was not organized by any event company. The meeting has been promoted spontaneously for several years by social networks.
The Association of Friends of the Riviera de São Lourenço, however, reported that for many years it has been alerting public security authorities about the exaggerations committed by bathers who spend New Year’s Eve in the Riviera.
Starting at 0:00 on day 1, all the cities of São Paulo entered the red phase, the most restrictive of the quarantine against the Covid-19 pandemic. The measure will remain in effect until Sunday (3) to stop the spread of the disease in the state.
Bertioga accumulated 2,457 confirmed cases and 48 deaths from Covid-19 until day 1, according to the city council.
