The new strain is spreading more among young people under 20, says virologist

Researchers from the Dasa laboratory announced on Thursday (31) the identification of the new variant of Covid-19 in São Paulo. The B117 strain of the virus has already been detected in England and in more than 30 countries, including Portugal, Denmark, Australia, India, South Korea and Canada. According to the laboratory, the finding has already been reported to the Adolfo Lutz Institute and the Health Surveillance.

In an interview with CNN this Friday (1) the virologist and professor at the Feevale University of Rio Grande do Sul Fernando Spilki commented on the ease of transmission of this new strain and pointed out that the age group that is now most infected by this variant of the virus are young people with less than 20 years.

“In the UK they are comparing the previous baud rates for this new variant with the current baud rate. The result is that before it was just under 1 and now they are at rates of 1.3 and 1.7. This previous variation, where more people are being infected by a single case, is what brings this idea that we have seen in the articles: in the United Kingdom the increase in cases is between 50 and 60%. If there was any doubt at that time that this new strain is more transmissible, that seems very clear now, “said the virologist, who coordinates the work of 50 researchers at 12 Brazilian universities and research centers to sequence variants in Brazil.

Spilki also points out that the relaxation of the social behavior of the very young is opening space for the Covid-19 virus to evolve and expose new classes.

“Younger people are not necessarily more susceptible to this variation of the virus, they all are, but this afternoon an article just came out from the University of Oxford that states that all age groups are susceptible, but it is impressive at first that in people under 20 years of age there was a significant record of cases in an age group that was previously less affected by the virus. This reveals two caveats: it does not mean that the elderly are not susceptible, and it appears that this new strain spreads best among the very young, which is sure to impact the back-to-school and vaccination campaign. The fact is that we are giving space, free space, for the virus to be free and evolve. The outbreaks of this variant are related to the relaxation of the social behavior of the very young. The South African variant itself appears to have benefited greatly from the youth and adult parties. This is very worrying, we are giving a lot of possibilities for this transmission to occur ”, highlighted the virologist.

Asked if this new strain identified in São Paulo could gain space in the rest of the country, he warns: “Knowing the history of how the different lineages spread in the country, this air traffic is the origin of the lineages that are gaining space in Brazil. We are also investigating the generation of new variations in Brazil, but it will be more difficult than being able to contain this strain in São Paulo. The record shows that the lineages end up spreading throughout the country from these import poles of people who arrive infected.
