End of the year pandemic: cars give way to people through the empty streets of Copacabana

RIO – At 7:59 pm, Metrô Rio agents closed access to the network in Praça Eugênio Jardim, at the Cantagalo station, in Copacabana. Unlike previous years, it was the cars, rather than the crowds, that were occupying Avenida Atlântica at that time. The streets of the neighborhood and the few open establishments were empty. There are also many police officers watching.

The deserted arena and the working kiosks are with little to no movement. The City Council works by towing the cars parked on the shore and agents of the Military Guard perform the inspection. A fallen tree, due to the rain, in the Copacabana Palace did not cause traffic or disturbances in the place.

On Avenida Atlântica, even the apartment windows are empty. Also noteworthy is the number of lights out where, in previous years, there were several parties and gatherings.

In the corner block of Bulhões de Carvalho and Gomes Carneiro streets, there were a large number of unsuspecting drivers who ended up being blocked for not knowing the rules of the road. In addition to residents without proof of residence, there are also request car passengers and taxis who need to disembark and continue on foot, many of them for New Year’s Eve holidays.

According to the municipal guards working on the site, there are also a lot of people who want to cut their way down the road, without knowing the blocking scheme.

– I live nearby, but I came to look for my in-laws who are staying in a hotel. I didn’t know I would be locked in here, ”says 34-year-old business manager Pedro Abi-Rihan.

‘Feeling of sadness and strangeness’

A group of six young people, between 19 and 25 years old, arrived from Brasilia and arrived in Rio yesterday to celebrate the change of course. They wanted to visit Copacabana’s famous New Year’s Eve and see the fireworks, but ended up stopping at a kiosk on the boardwalk.

– I want to return without this pandemic. I confess that it is very boring, but it would be better than staying in my city – says Ananda do Amaral, airport manager.

Copacabana lawyer Ariane Cazado, 32, canceled the trip to Foz do Iguaçu due to the pandemic. He was surprised to see the neighborhood today:

– Feeling of sadness and strangeness, but at least I feel safe for not having traveled. I came to the kiosk just to stay home.

Accompanied by her daughter, the Bahian civil servant, Mariana Esteves, 33, arrived today from Bahia with her daughter to Copacabana.

– I wanted to show my daughter the Copacabana party. At least I expected the led show. It’s sad, but at least we are here. But since I have few people, I feel safer not to crowd and run a greater risk of contamination – he says.

The turn of the pandemic will not have fireworks or shows on the beach. And access to the shore, from Leme to Recreio, in Pontal, will be controlled through 54 blocking points. Between 8 pm this Thursday, when the beaches traditionally begin to fill up, especially in Copacabana, and 3 am this Friday, buses and vans will no longer be able to enter the region.

In addition, the measure, in addition to containing the crowds that congregate by the sea at the turn of the year, will affect private parties. The idea is to discourage people from leaving home, in the midst of the pandemic, for large family gatherings.
