“He was an example of a father, husband and professional. His passion was to wear the uniform and help people. And it is thanks to him that my son is alive today. He was a hero.” The still emotional story belongs to the artisan Débora Pinho Melo, 27, wife of the corporal of the Military Police Diogo Gomes de Melo, 31 years old. The prime minister drowned while trying to save four children in the Itanhaém sea, off the coast of São Paulo, on Tuesday afternoon (29).

According to Débora, as it was her husband’s rest, the family decided to enjoy the afternoon on the beach. She, her 9-year-old son, Diogo, and three nephews, two 12 and one 13, were playing in the sea when they noticed the waves starting to get stronger.

“As the children and I did not know how to swim we were at the shallow end, but at one point the wave threw us. I pulled my nephews and guided them to go to the sand strip and when I looked back I saw my son drowning already Diogo trying to help him ”, explains Débora.

Even so, according to the craftsman, still not knowing how to swim, she went into the sea and tried to go to where Diogo and his son were, when she realized that her husband was also drowning.

“He held my son up to prevent him from drowning, but the sea dragged him to the bottom and he no longer had the strength to swim. I started screaming and some people who were on the beach came to help us. A man entered the sea and I managed to get my son out, Diogo disappeared into the water. Everything was very fast, ”adds the policeman’s wife.

After leaving her son on the sand strip, Débora relates that she desperately tried to get into the water to look for her husband, but popular people held her back. “I could only see Diogo’s hand, as if indicating a request for help. I wanted to help him, but people hugged me and took me, ”he recalls.

Minutes later the lifeguards arrived and the search for the military police began. Diogo’s body was found about an hour later.

Example of a father and loved the PM

Married to the policeman for six years, Débora remembers that her husband was an exemplary father and took care of her 9-year-old stepson, as if he were his blood child.

“He was a very correct person and valued his family first. Everything he did was due to the people he loved. Everything my son is today I owe to the teachings that Diogo gave. He took care of people,” he says.

Even according to his wife, Diogo’s second passion in life was the Military Police. “He loved PM and was very dedicated to his career. When he wore the uniform he knew about his mission and did everything possible to honor it, ”he adds.

Bolsonaro goes to the police funeral

Diogo was veiled and buried yesterday afternoon at the São Vicente Metropolitan Cemetery, where he was born. President Jair Bolsonaro, who spends the end of the year in Guarujá, also on the coast of São Paulo, was present.

“It was a very big surprise. Diogo was a very good person, he deserves to be remembered,” says the soldier’s wife.
