This Tuesday (29), on the Copacabana boardwalk, the RJ1 caught 72 people without a mask in 15 minutes. Another 17 had the accessory on their chin.

The municipality decided to expand all over the edge of town, from Leme to Pontal, the blocks on new year’s eve, from Thursday (31st) to Friday (1st).

The measures already planned for Copacabana now they will apply to the beaches of the South Zone (of Leme) and to Recreio and they were published in an extra edition of the Official Gazette this Monday (28).

Last week, the acting mayor of Rio, councilor Jorge Felippe (DEM), had already determined the closure of access to Copacabana, the traditional scene of the traditional party on duty, which was canceled, and forbidden fireworks and sound equipment on the shore.

The measures were taken after the increase in the number of cases and deaths from Covid-19 in recent weeks in Rio de Janeiro. Nearly 25,000 deaths from the disease have already been reported in the state, more than half in the capital.

Only the vehicles of residents with proof of residence, hotel guests with proof of reservation and workers of commercial establishments with functional credentials will be able to pass through the blocks, according to the city council.

The kiosks can work, but without music, without “corralito” and without entrance fee. Individual pedestrians with permits may work, but boatmen are prohibited from 8 pm on Wednesday (30) to 6 am on Friday (1st) (see more details below).

Also within this package of restrictions, the metro announced on Monday that on the 31st the lines will stop running at 8:00 p.m. It is the first time since 1998, when the metro reached Copacabana, that there will be no operation on the curve.

During a press conference with city officials to announce the measures, this Monday afternoon, Alexandre Cardeman, executive director of the Rio Operations Center (COR), said the measures were decided in memory and respect for the more than 190,000 dead in Brazil. .

“We need to send a hard and direct message to the population (…) The plan and the decree are much more a tool to mitigate crowds and celebrations with large numbers of people. What we want to happen at that moment, regardless of the restrictions that are created, is that it depends a lot on each one of us. Take a conscious turn and stay home. ”

“There is no better image than the empty shore and Copacabana beach without anyone so that we can honor all those who have left (…) Anyone who insists on moving unnecessarily can, yes, face inconveniences and may be in a situation of discomfort. So the recommendation is: stay home, ”Cardeman said.

Those who resist the restrictions can be fined and establishments closed., according to representatives of the city council.
