Corinthians have not finished the year with victory since 2014; see the club sequence in the decade

Corinthians enters the field this Sunday, at 4 pm (Brasilia time), to face Botafogo, in Engenhão, for the 27th round of the Brazilian Championship. Against Cariocas, Timão tries to break a recent losing streak in duels of this type: he has not won the last game of the year since 2014.

Looking to close a 2020 that will leave little to the fans, Corinthians achieved their last triumph at the end of a year when they defeated Criciúma 2-1, on December 6 of that season. The goals were from Elias and Fábio Santos, the latter of the most beautiful in the history of Neo Química Arena.

In addition, the other time in the decade in which Timão was victorious in matches of this type was precisely in the 1-0 victory against Chelsea, for the Club World Cup, in 2012. In the previous year, the team was champion Brazilian, but with a 0-0 draw with Palmeiras.

Some factors contribute to the sequence being so long, of course. To begin with, in two of those years, Corinthians reached the final round of the Brazilian Championship, already champion of the competition, without much else to compete in the tournament. The duel against Botafogo, by the way, is the only one that does not determine the end of the season, prolonged by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The only year the club actually played anything in the last round was 2016. Under Oswaldo de Oliveira, the team visited Cruzeiro in Mineirão to try to reach a spot in the Copa Libertadores da América, but ended up defeated 3 -2. I do not qualify.

In the last two years, Timão had already decided his fate before the tournament ended. In 2018, he got rid of relegation in the penultimate round and closed his participation with a loss to Grêmio, away from home. In 2019, already classified to the Libertadores, he lost to Fluminense in Neo Química Arena.
