Christmas Eve started with a strong storm in some regions of Belo Horizonte on the afternoon of Thursday (24). The statement issued by the municipality’s Civil Defense foresees that rainfall with volumes of up to 40 mm is expected, followed by gusts of around 50 km / h and isolated storms. The alert is valid until 8 am on Friday (25).

A real-time map from the security agency, at 12:51 pm, revealed that the rains were extremely heavy in the Central-South region of Belo Horizonte, thus classified when the volume of rain exceeds five millimeters in an interval of five minutes. At the same time, a graph indicated moderate rainfall – up to 2.5 mm – in the western region and heavy – with a volume of up to 5 mm – in the east. The northwest, northeast and north regions were affected by weaker rains and there was no rain in Venda Nova, Pampulha or Barreiro.

At 1:06 pm, a recent change in the map indicated that the storm was strong in the Central-South and Eastern regions, and the condition remained moderate in the West. On the other hand, it was no longer raining in the Northwest, Northeast and North regions, and the weather outlook remained stable in the other three regions of Belo Horizonte as well. Despite the situation, between 12:30 pm and 1:00 pm on Thursday (24), there was an extremely heavy rain in the northwest, strong in the northeast and weak in Barreiro. According to information provided by the Civil Defense of Belo Horizonte, until that moment there was no record of rainfall in the Pampulha and Venda Nova regions.
However, at 1:21 pm, a newly updated map indicates that it started to rain in the Pampulha region, but the blows are considered moderate until then, as well as in the West region. Rain is still strong in the eastern region and extremely strong in the south-central and northwest. Five minutes later, the rains became strong in the Center-South, East, Northwest and Pampulha. It started to rain in Venda Nova, which, as in the west, has low intensity rainfall, up to one millimeter every five minutes.
At 1:31 pm, the rain gained intensity and became extremely strong in the Pampulha region, so it also remained in the northwest. At that time, it simply did not rain in the northeast and northern regions of Belo Horizonte. Ten minutes later, at 1:42 pm, the blows lost steam and became strong in the northwest and weak in Pampulha. It also rains weakly in Venda Nova, strong in the northeast region and moderate in the center-south and east.
Approximately one hour after the rains began, at 2:21 pm, the rains continued in practically all regions of Belo Horizonte, except Barreiro. The Civil Defense map of the municipality indicates moderate rainfall in the West, Central-South, Northeast and North regions, weak in the East, Pampulha and Venda Nova, and extremely heavy in the Northwest.

The security agency warns that the inhabitants of the city do not walk on streets subject to flooding or flooding at the time of heavy rainfall, nor do they cross flooded streets. As for the cars, the orientation does not protect them or park them under the trees. It is also recommended that depressions in the ground, cracks in the walls and the appearance of mines be reported immediately to the Civil Defense.
