Turkey said on Thursday (24) that the CoronaVac vaccine was 91.25% effective against the new coronavirus, according to the Reuters news agency.

CoronaVac is developed by China’s Sinovac, which has an agreement with the São Paulo government. The Butantan Institute coordinates the tests in Brazil and is already working on the production of the immunizer from raw material received from China. On Wednesday, the São Paulo government had the forecast to announce the effectiveness of the vaccine, but the disclosure was postponed at the request of the Chinese manufacturer.

The Secretary of State for Health of São Paulo, Jean Gorinchteyn, said that the effectiveness measured in the tests in Brazil is “well above” the minimum of 50% recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), but the data obtained in Brazil they are different from those obtained in other countries where it is tested. The immunizer is being tested in China, Brazil, Turkey, and Indonesia.

“(Sinovac) wants to understand why we got one result and, in other countries, another,” said Jean Gorinchteyn.

According to Reuters, the Turkish researchers said the rate is “likely to increase based on data from advanced stage tests.”

The researchers, who are part of the government’s scientific council, said no major symptoms were detected during CoronaVac tests in Turkey, except for one person who had an allergic reaction.

Turkey bought 50 million doses of CoronaVac on December 11, but the shipment was delayed. Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said that the vaccines will arrive in Turkey on Monday (28), adding that the country will vaccinate around 9 million people in the first group, starting with health professionals.
