Hours after arriving in Miami, Florida, the United States, the governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB), announced that he will return to Brazil after his deputy was diagnosed with Covid-19.
“I just received the news that the Lieutenant Governor, Rodrigo García, tested positive for Covid-19. As a result, I am canceling my license and returning to SP today to continue work ahead of the SP Government. Recovery to Rodrigo García, ”said Doria on his Twitter account.
In a note, the São Paulo government declared that it gave up its family vacation in Florida, where it arrived on Wednesday.
“Governor João Doria decided to return to São Paulo this Wednesday (23), as soon as he learned that Lieutenant Governor Rodrigo García tested positive for coronavirus. He gave up his family vacation in Florida, where he arrived today,” the note says.
Doria was criticized on social media for traveling during the tightening of quarantine rules during the Christmas season. The governor was photographed at the airport in the early hours of Wednesday, in line to take a flight to Miami.
In a press conference on Tuesday (22), the São Paulo government determined measures to tighten the quarantine, with greater restrictions on the operation of goods and services throughout the state during Christmas and New Year’s Eve. According to the announcement, only essential services will be able to operate on December 25, 26 and 27 and January 1, 2 and 3.

- markets;
- bakeries;
- gas stations;
- laundries;
- public transportation, such as buses, trains, and subways;
- and hotels, inns and other hotel services.
Do not open on December 25, 26 and 27 and January 1, 2 and 3:
- Malls;
- stories;
- Concessionaires;
- Offices;
- bars, restaurants and cafeterias (except at home);
- gyms;
- Beauty salons;
- and cinemas, theaters and other cultural establishments.
