Under the command of Vagner Mancini, Timão has the use of G-4 and can still benefit from the opening of new places for the South American tournament
“We are changing the level”, was the phrase of Vágner Mancini after the victory of Corinthians against Goiás, this Monday (22). And the team is really evolving with each round in the coach’s hand. With that, already at the top of the table, although he is still out of the G-6, Timão has good reasons to dream of a place in the Libertadores next year.

After a very weak start to the Brazilian Championship with Tiago Nunes and a bet on Dyego Coelho as interim, Corinthians entered Z-4 and indicated that they would really be one of the relegation candidates if nothing was done. Then Vagner Mancini arrived and the situation of the team changed.
Under the command of the coach at Brasileirão, Alvinegro from São Paulo has already played 11 games: there were six wins, three draws and two losses, which represents an improvement of 63.6%. By way of comparison, Flamengo, second place in the selection, wins an average of 64% of the points he disputes.
In that way, Corinthians will probably continue to climb some positions in the table if Mancini maintains this advantage until the end of the championship, and due to the evolution of the team in each round, this is something that can really happen.
The first point worked by the coach was the defense and the competitiveness of the team. And for that, the contributions of Gabriel and Ramiro were fundamental. But the evolution of the team does not happen only in the defensive system.
Since the beginning of the year, one of Timão’s most obvious problems has been attacking and creating chances, especially against opponents who play further back. And this Monday (22), against Goiás, the team showed that it is also improving a lot in this regard, mainly due to a trio that Mancini already knew from the time of Atlético-MG: Cazares, Otero and Fábio Santos.

The 10 jersey was the highlight of the game with two assists and, with freedom to move through the middle and get well in attack, he has been the main organizer of the team’s game.
Otero has also been increasing in production. In addition to the powerful shots and the constant danger on the dead ball, the Venezuelan is participating more in the attack plays and seems to have earned a place in the right opener.
Finally, Fábio Santos has been one of the main names in the team, despite being 35 years old, and many times he seems to play on the inside, almost like a midfielder, helping a lot in the setting of the plays.

G-6 that can become G-8

Even so, the clear evolution of the team does not guarantee that Corinthians can enter the G-6. Corinthians currently occupies ninth place in the table, five points behind Palmeiras, sixth place. But if the fight to stay in the top six won’t be easy, Timão can still benefit from the opening of new vacancies for Libertadores.
In the semifinals of the Copa do Brasil, Palmeiras, Grêmio and São Paulo, who are in the G-6 of Brasileirão, are still fighting for the title of the competition. Thus, if the cup is for any of the three clubs, the seventh place in the Brazilian Championship will also qualify for the South American tournament. The only way that this does not happen is with América-MG, by Lisca Doido, champion of the Brazilian Cup.
With Libertadores the situation can be repeated, although it is not so easy. Palmeiras and Santos are already guaranteed in the semifinals and, if one of the two clubs conquers America this year, Brazil will have eight representatives in the Libertadores in 2021.
If staying in the top six at Brasileirão can still be difficult for Corinthians, being eighth doesn’t seem like an impossible mission. Of course, there is no guarantee that the G-6 will actually become the G-8, but if that happens, Vagner Mancini’s team has a great chance of taking one of the 2021 Libertadores seats.
