A university professor is investigated on suspicion of keeping a 46-year-old woman in conditions similar to slavery in Patos de Minas, in the Alto Paranaíba region, in Minas Gerais. After the accusations, he was removed, this Monday (21), from the activities he carried out in an educational institution in the city (see note below). His mother and wife are also being investigated.
According to information obtained and disseminated by a report from Fantástico, on Sunday (20), the suspicion is that the woman, a domestic worker, was kept under the supervision of the bosses (the teacher, his wife), without antecedents, salary. minimum or paid weekly rest.
She was rescued on November 27, after complaints, by labor tax auditors and the Federal Police (PF). The woman lived in the suspect’s apartment, in a small room, “without windows, covered and without ventilation,” according to labor inspector Humberto Moteiro Camasmie.
After being rescued, the maid began living in a shelter for women victims of violence.
The master and his wife are investigated for subjecting a person to slave-like work, in addition to human trafficking. They can also face misappropriation, with up to 20 years in prison. Her mother, the maid’s first employee, can also be held responsible.
Understand the story
In the report, the woman said that she came to the teacher’s mother’s house at age eight, remembering that she went to the place to ask for food, but that the owner of the house offered to adopt her. The adoption was never formalized.
Since then, she has worked as a domestic worker, being forced to drop out of school. After 24 years, the daily cleaner was brought to work at the teacher’s home, where she was held until November.
After 38 years, she was rescued after neighbors suspected the situation and reported it to the Labor Prosecutor’s Office, who through the Patos de Minas Prosecutor’s Office filed a precautionary action to access the residence and repair the woman.
According to information, so far, only the professor was heard during the investigations. Due to threats, the family no longer lives in Patos de Minas.
Defending
In a note, the defense of the family, through attorney Brian Epstein Campos, reported that it has not yet had access to all the elements that involve the possible victim, and that the “premature and irresponsible” disclosure of the investigation “ violates the rights and sensitive family data “.
See the full note:
“With regard to all possible and valid interpretations and the right to demonstrate in a democracy, the defense reports that it has not yet had access to all the elements that involve the victim. Premature and irresponsible disclosure, by inspectors and state agents, before a process that recognizes guilt, violates the rights and sensitive data of that family and threatens their personal safety. The defense will continue, discreet and serious, acting exclusively within the constitutional limits and due process. We are in a moment of Christian fellowship and careful reflection, after knowing all the facts, it will never create harm.
The teacher is far
After the complaints, the teacher was removed from the activities he carried out in an educational institution in the city. Through a statement, the university center stated that it does not agree with the facts denounced and that, therefore, it opted for dismissal.

“We learned of a news item, referring to a case analogous to slavery, which involves a professor from the institution, just yesterday, through the media, and we inform everyone that we are not in communion with the events there reported. We assure everyone: students, teachers and employees, as well as the community in general, that all applicable and legal measures are already being taken. Furthermore, we inform that said professor is already retired from his activities at the institution ”.
