A 46-year-old black woman who, since she was 8, had lived in conditions similar to slavery. An investigation by the Labor Prosecutor’s Office revealed the story of Madalena, a domestic worker exploited by a family from Minas Gerais.
She received no salary, had no rights, and lived in prison, under the supervision of her employers, until the end of November, when she was released by labor tax auditors and the Federal Police from a department in downtown Patos de Minas.
The steps are still a bit hesitant. With care, she now knows new landscapes and experiences that are every day for many of us, but new to her, like walking in a park, for free. Madalena Gordiano has spent the last 38 years unable to lead her own life.
Since 1995, 55,000 people have been rescued as slaves in the country, most of them in the countryside. Last year, 14 people were rescued from slave domestic work, which is harder to identify. Look at the report.
