The great-grandmother of María Clara Calixto, 5, found dead yesterday in Hortolândia (interior of São Paulo), said during the girl’s funeral today, in the Parque Hortolândia cemetery, that the girl reported feeling pain when urinating. The stepfather, Cássio Martins Camilo, 27, confessed that he abused his stepdaughter and suffocated her.

“She used to go to the bathroom and it took a long time. I asked her what was wrong. She said, ‘Grandma, I’m sick. I’m going to urinate and it hurts,'” said Ilza Viana Nascimento, 68. His mother, Franciele Nascimento, 25, warned about the situation.

The girl’s funeral was at 10 am today, in an act with more than a hundred people marked by crowds and outrage.

The girl’s mother was supported by a friend as soon as the body was buried.

The Municipal Guard reinforced security at the wake to avoid confusion such as at the door of the 1st Police District, when dozens of people threw bombs and wanted to attack Camilo.

The Civil Police confirmed that they found genetic material in the girl’s body. Forensic experts conducted the collection, which is for analysis. The intent is to confirm when the sexual abuse occurred.

According to police chief João Jorge, Camilo did not show any kind of remorse or regret.

The suspicion is that the girl was murdered around 5 in the morning yesterday. It was at the same time that the mother went to work and that her stepfather fled to Monte Mor (SP), a city near Hortolândia. Camilo’s arrest occurred when he was preparing to follow Campinas (SP) in a car called by request.

Cássio had already been arrested in 2018 for abusing another stepdaughter, who was 9 years old at the time. Although the rape was confirmed, he was released and is free for the crime because there was no flagrante delicto.

This time, the man was fined on the spot for murder and sexual abuse.

Camilo was transferred last night to a prison in the Sorocaba region (SP).
