The Ministry of Health confirmed today the second case of covid-19 reinfection in Brazil. The case concerns a 41-year-old woman from Fernandópolis, in the state of São Paulo. According to the Ministry, the team from the Adolfo Lutz Institute (IAL) notified the portfolio yesterday about the fact.

On Wednesday, São Paulo confirmed the first case in the state. The secretariat indicated that the patient tested positive for covid-19 in June and, in November, 145 days after the first diagnosis, the second positive test was confirmed.

According to the Ministry of Health, the case was investigated following the “established criteria” for the confirmation of the second infection, which constitute two positive results of RT-PCR in real time and with an interval equal to or greater than 90 days between the two tests. .

In a note, the Ministry noted that, in addition to the Adolfo Lutz Institute, two more laboratories in the country – Evandro Chagas Institute, in Pará, and Fiocruz, in Rio de Janeiro – are investigating possible cases of reinfection by coronavirus in Brazil.

First case

Last week, the first case of reinfection by coronavirus was confirmed by the Ministry of Health. A 37-year-old doctor from Rio Grande do Norte had two positive diagnoses for COVID-19 in an interval of almost four months.

The Health Ministry said at the time that at least 58 other cases were being investigated.

“So far, we have 58 suspected cases that have been reported by state health departments. In these cases, the person has had their first confirmed infection and what needs to be confirmed now is whether there was a reinfection,” explained Greice Madeleine Ikeda do Carmo. director of the Department of Strategic Coordination of Health Surveillance, during a press conference last week.
