Maria Clara Calixto, 5 years old, was found dead today in Hortolândia, in the interior of São Paulo. She had been missing since yesterday. The body was located in a vacant lot, next to the house where the family lived, on the outskirts of the city. The Civil Police confirmed that the girl’s stepfather, Cássio Martins Camilo, 27, confessed to having sexually abused and later killed his stepdaughter.

The mother, Franciele Kauane Vieira do Nascimento, 25, told the police that she had gone out to work and had left her daughter with her stepfather, still sleeping, in the house where the three lived, in Vila Real.

When he got to lunch, he asked his partner where the girl was. He reportedly said the girl went to play with the neighbor’s daughter. Franciele went to the residence, but found no one. She called her friend, who said she was leaving the house early.

Neighbors and relatives mobilized in the search, which was transferred to social networks. Camilo also helped with the work. This morning, a man, who also helped with the searches, saw a cardboard box with something wrapped in a plastic bag, on a plot 100 meters from the house where the family lived.

He called the Military Police and the Municipal Guard of Hortolândia. The biological mother and father also went to the site. When he saw the body of María Clara, Franciele despaired.

The stepfather was arrested in the morning by the police, as he prepared to flee. He had gone during the night to the house of some relatives, in Monte Mor (SP), a city near Hortolândia, and was approached in a car on his way to Campinas.

“Taken to the police station, he confessed that he sexually abused the girl and strangled her, putting the body in the box,” Chief João Jorge, head of the 1st PD in Hortolândia, said at a press conference this afternoon.

“We believe that all this happened around 5 in the morning yesterday, since it was the time that the mother left for work,” added the delegate.

The Civil Police are now investigating when the sexual abuse occurred and if the mother knew what had happened. Cassio had already been convicted of rape and murder on Monte Mor. The motive for the crime has not yet been clarified, according to the police chief. The suspicion is that there was a fight between the couple the night before over his stepfather’s drug addiction.

When Maria Clara’s body was found, outrage gripped the residents and family. Disgusted with the onlookers taking pictures of the boy’s body, the father began to ask everyone to stay away.

Later, a man, to whom his identity was not revealed, assaulted a driver at Record TV in São Paulo, who was standing next to the station’s van to record material about the case. The news car had a broken rear window and the employee had multiple injuries to his face.

A VTV / SBT cameraman was threatened and a film reporter from TV Thathi, an affiliate of Record TV in Campinas, was hit by a stone. The station car also had a broken windshield.

At first it was reported that the man would be the father of María Clara, but the police confirmed that he was not the aggressor. The man would be a neighbor of the family and was outraged by the situation.

At the Hortolândia police station, dozens of neighbors and people who found out about the case held a protest demanding justice. When a vehicle arrived, allegedly bringing his stepfather, an attempt was made to invade the DP by land at the rear.

The Military Police reinforced security. A tire barricade caught fire and the street was blocked as of press time.
