The mayor, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), said on Friday (18) that President Jair Bolsonaro lied and that the federal government is responsible for not expanding the Bolsa Família program.

Maia made the statement after Bolsonaro accused him of not voting on the payment of the 13th installment of Bolsa Família. As Mayor, Maia is in charge of the House voting guidelines.

“The episode, another episode that happened yesterday [quinta-feira], when unfortunately the President of the Republic lied about me. By the way, a lot of coincidence, the narrative that he used yesterday, with the narrative that the ‘bolsominions’ used for a year with me in relation to the parliamentarians who lose their validity in this house. It’s the same narrative, ”Maia said, in a speech to the House plenary.

On Thursday (17), in the weekly live broadcast on social networks, Bolsonaro said that Maia was to blame that the beneficiaries of Bolsa Família had not received the 13th installment of the benefit this year.

Maia used the speech on the House podium to give Bolsonaro an answer. Earlier, Maia decided to put on the agenda a provisional measure that extended the payment of emergency aid, including the payment of the XIII Bolsa Família in 2020.

“As the government wants the XIII Bolsa Família, they will be able to defend the measure in the MP of aid,” said the president of the Chamber to the blog of journalist Andréia Sadi.

Planalto’s allies viewed Maia’s decision as retaliation for the president’s statement and began to articulate the removal of the issue from the agenda to avoid the political attrition of the government.

In his speech, Maia stressed that the articulation to remove the text from the agenda showed that it is the government that does not want to vote for the expansion of social programs.

“I needed to make my speech to safeguard the image of this House and of my presidency. Because tomorrow the narrative will stop being 13 of Bolsa Família, and it will say that we were the ones who ended up with emergency aid because we did not vote for the MP. “Maia said.

Earlier, the leader of the government in the Chamber, Ricardo Barros (PP-PR), had entered the field to try to calm the mood.

The deputy published a message on social networks saying that the MP that anticipated the 13th of the Bolsa Familia was not voted, because there were no resources to pay the Christmas bonus of Continuous Benefit (BPC), included in the text during the processing exempting Maia from responsibility for the matter not being voted on.

Maia referred to Barros’ speech in her speech.

“As the government leader said, there is no interest on the part of the government base and the government for their leader to vote on this matter. [MP] because it has already had its effects, “he said.

Planalto Palace said it would not comment on Maia’s remarks.
