With Brazil breaking a record in the number of deaths due to the new coronavirus, the Covid-19 BR Observatory advocated stricter restriction measures to halt the country’s pandemic growth trend.
The Covid-19 BR Observatory is an independent initiative of researchers from Brazil and abroad to disseminate discoveries about the new disease.
“The basic guideline would be the closure of non-essential shops and services,” says the group statement, which opposes the operation of restaurants and gyms, in addition to being in disagreement with the holding of parties and events at this time. “Eventually and locally, an overnight curfew may be necessary.”
Currently, the country has already surpassed the mark of 7 million cases and is close to reaching the mark of 185 thousand deaths. The data, in absolute numbers, shows that Brazil has the second worst scenario in the world, only behind the United States.
There are already restrictions
The restrictions, in the group’s view, have to start now, before Christmas, and continue until at least mid-January for a reassessment. Experts emphasize social distance as one of the tools to avoid contagion. The group’s defense is that the measures are implemented in localities where there is a growing trend of the pandemic.
“The catastrophe that will be announced will not be reversed naturally. The logic of the multiplication of cases is simple and incomplete: new cases generate other new cases ”, adds the note from the observatory.
We cannot afford to lose all the effort made so far. With the increase in cases and the saturation of the health system in several states, in addition to the upcoming Christmas season, it is imperative that action is taken with the necessary urgency, so that we can reduce the number of lives lost.

A member of the group, Lorena Barberia, professor at the Department of Political Science of USP (University of São Paulo), tells the Twitter that the statement is to show that “it is never too late to react”.

Governments have not implemented tougher measures. In Búzios (RJ), for example, the restrictions were adopted by court order.
“We are seeing new growth here after a fall. This new growth must stop,” says Roberto Kraenkel, professor at the IFT (Institute of Theoretical Physics) at Unesp (Universidade Estadual Paulista) and member of the observatory. “We are seeing an increase in cases. And she has no reason to stop now.”

The state of São Paulo even backtracked on its reopening plan. But the government’s decisions are subject to criticism from the observatory. Bars and restaurants, for example, can stay open, but for less time, as determined by the São Paulo government.
According to the state, the new regulations became necessary due to the increase in hospitalizations among young people. Between March and November, the age group with the highest demand for beds was 55 to 75 years. At the beginning of December, it descended to the age group between 30 and 50 years.
“There is no use saying that the bar can stay open and then telling the boy not to go to the bar. This generates mixed messages,” says Kraenkel. “The government has to be clear about what it can and cannot do. We are not going to expect society to organize itself in this sense.”
If things are allowed, the citizen does them because there is nothing to prohibit. Combine that with some tiredness and the feeling that it never ends, and you end up having a lot of people on the street.

For Kraenkel, people cannot fail to comply with protection measures against the pandemic due to the expectation of the vaccine against covid-19.
In his opinion, whoever does this “agrees that, within these two, three months, more people die than it is necessary to die.” “I still think that it is important to clarify the population. The ultimate goal is to reduce the number of deaths, cases. And this is achieved with distance ”, says the teacher.
Barberia adds: “For a vaccination campaign to work, it is essential that the pandemic is controlled.”
