President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) said this afternoon that he will not be vaccinated against covid-19 because, according to him, he already had the virus and created antibodies. The statement took place during a ceremony held this afternoon in Porto Seguro (BA).
Brazil has already confirmed at least two cases of reinfection of the disease and 49 suspected cases, according to the Ministry of Health. There is also no scientific evidence that people who have had coronavirus would be exempt from contracting COVID-19 again.
“I will not take [a vacina]. Some say that I am setting a bad example. Hey, idiot, idiot, that is to say from the bad example, I already had the virus, I already have antibodies. Why get vaccinated again? “, I ask.
Brazil has already registered at least two cases of covid-19 reinfection. In the first, a 37-year-old doctor from Rio Grande do Norte (whose name was not disclosed) was twice infected with the virus and is being followed to help scientists get more details about how the second infection occurs.
Last night, the government of São Paulo confirmed the second case, of a 41-year-old woman, resident in Fernandópolis (SP), in the northwest of the state.
Also during the event, Bolsonaro also criticized the fact that the American pharmaceutical company Pfizer exempted itself from responsibility in case of side effects of the vaccine. The measure would be in a purchase intention contract. The government went so far as to defend the inclusion of a term of responsibility for anyone interested in getting vaccinated, but the possibility was ruled out by the MP’s vaccine rapporteur, Deputy Geninho Zuliani (DEM-SP).
“And another thing that needs to be made clear … There in the Pfizer contract, It is very clear that we (Pfizer) are not responsible for any side effects. If you turn into an alligator, it’s your problem. If you turn into Superman, if a woman grows a beard there or if a man starts talking thin, they have nothing to do with it. And what is worse is manipulating the immune system of people, “he added then.
Mandatory vaccination
In his speech, Bolsonaro again criticized those who defend the mandatory vaccine. However, it is not up to the president to define whether a vaccine will be mandatory or not, but to the Ministry of Health, according to the Constitution. In the context of the pandemic, the speech continues to be contrary to a law approved by the president himself, in February of this year, which determines which authorities can make the covid-19 vaccine mandatory:
To face the public health emergency of international importance due to the coronavirus, the following measures may be adopted, among others:
I – isolation;
II – quarantine;
III – determination of the mandatory performance of:
a) medical examinations;
b) laboratory tests;
c) collection of clinical samples;
re) vaccination and other prophylactic measures; or
e) specific medical treatments “.
There is also the ECA (Statute of Children and Adolescents), which provides for the vaccination of young people up to 18 years of age when recommended by the health authorities. Non-compliance, according to the norm, can result in the collection of a fine of three to 20 minimum wages to those responsible.
MP signature
The president today signed an MP (Provisional Measure) that opens an extraordinary loan of R $ 20 billion, in favor of the Ministry of Health, for the vaccination of the population against covid-19 in Brazil, including the purchase of immunizers.
The funds must be used for the purchase of vaccines in addition to the contract already signed with AstraZeneca, in alliance with the Osvaldo Cruz Foundation. Among them, the doses of Pfizer, with whom the government negotiates the acquisition of 70 million doses.
However, it is worth mentioning that any vaccine needs minimal coverage to be effective. A study published in August indicates that if an immunizer against the coronavirus is 80% effective, it must be applied to at least 75% of the population to end the pandemic.
