President Jair Bolsonaro said on Wednesday (16), during the launch of the vaccination plan against Covid-19, that the pandemic caused by the coronavirus “affected him from the beginning.” At the time the first cases began to appear in Brazil, in late February and early March, Bolsonaro said there was “hysteria” surrounding the disease.

In the plan’s launch speech, the president also said that if anyone took any exaggerated action during the pandemic, it was because of the “desire to find a solution.”

“It really affected us from the beginning. We didn’t know what this virus was, as we don’t know much yet, Dr. Caiado [Ronaldo Caiado, governador de Goiás]. And we, all brothers, are about to present a concrete alternative to get rid of this evil, “said Bolsonaro.

“The great strength that we all show now is the unity to find a solution to something that has afflicted us for months. If any of us went overboard or even exaggerated, it was in an effort to find a solution,” added the president .

Bolsonaro, since the beginning of the pandemic, has criticized the measures taken by state and municipal governments to stop the spread of the coronavirus, such as the closure of part of the trade and social isolation. Although these measures are recommended by health authorities, Bolsonaro advocates more lenient actions, such as isolating only the elderly.

The president has also been stirring crowds at public events and has often not worn the mask.

On Tuesday (15), Bolsonaro said that he will not receive the vaccine. He also advocates that Brazilians sign a term of responsibility before being immunized. Experts criticized the president’s stance, saying that these actions make it difficult to fight the pandemic.
