The city of Rio de Janeiro decided on Tuesday (15) cancel all official New Year’s Eve parties in the city.

The Rio City Council cancels all year-end parties
The mayor of Rio made the decision after meeting with the secretaries where he took stock of the end of his term.

In a note published on Tuesday afternoon (15), the Rio tourism company (Riotur) added that the the cancellation occurred due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Riotur also said that although the New Year’s Eve 2021 in the city has been designed in a new format, “At this time the city chooses to cancel the New Years event out of respect for all victims and for the safety of all.”
This year, according to Riotur, the idea was to celebrate the change of course without the presence of the public, without burning fireworks with the party online and accompanied by TV. The celebration would take place in tourist spots in the city and not on the promenade, as is tradition.
This Monday (14), the Union of Accommodation Facilities of the Municipality of Río (Río Hotels) announced the second advance in hotel occupancy for New Year’s Eve 2021: 58% of the city’s hotel rooms were already reserved for the date.
Although 10 percentage points below that registered in the same period last year (68%), the index is considered positive if the pandemic scenario is taken into account, the union said.

- Copacabana and Leme – 63%
- Flamengo 61%
- Playground – 59%
- Barra da Tijuca – 52%
- Ipanema / Leblon – 51%.
Niterói cancels New Years Eve
The Niterói City Council announced last week that the New Year’s Eve celebrations in the city are suspended.
The determination is valid for party houses, bars, discos, restaurants and other events with ticket sales. The traditional fireworks display on the city’s beaches will not happen this year either.
According to the municipality, The objective is to prevent crowds and maintain control of the Covid-19 pandemic.
