The uncertainty about the continuation of emergency aid in 2021 only increases in late December. For this reason, Senator Alessandro Vieira (Cidadania-SE) presented a new bill (PL) that proposes the extension of emergency aid and the extension of the state of public calamity until March 31, 2021.

The project was presented this week. According to the senator, there are already conversations with other parliamentarians about the initiative, but there is not yet a forecast for its inclusion in the Chamber’s agenda.

The emergency aid and the state of public calamity are expected to end together on December 31, 2020. The bill presented by Senator Vieira proposes that this deadline be extended until March 2021 due to the economic impacts caused by the pandemic. of the new coronavirus. Above all, still, that the pandemic continues and that vaccination will take an indefinite time to conclude.

“The fact is, due to the inertia of the federal government, we simply will not have a national vaccination program before March. It is necessary to build this bridge to maintain a minimum of social stability until then ”, said the senator.

The parliamentarians will try to vote on Wednesday, December 16, on the Budget Guidelines Law (LDO) directly in the plenary session of Congress. Later, the congressmen will have to return to their bases for the holidays.

The emergency aid, approved in March in Congress, was initially paid for 3 months in the amount of R $ 600 to the so-called vulnerable. Subsequently, the benefit was extended for another 2 months, with the same value. Finally, in September the benefit was extended in 4 more installments until December 2020.

The Federal Government arrived and stipulated the creation of a new permanent income program, with values higher than those paid by Bolsa Família, but so far the issue has not been incorporated.

What the Government says about the extension of emergency aid

Last week, President Jair Bolsonaro (no party) made a new statement on the extension of emergency aid. During an event in Foz do Iguaçu, the president objected to extending the benefit once again. Currently, the program pays fees of R $ 300 to the beneficiaries. The aid ends payments on December 31st.

“Nothing dignifies man more than work, it is what we need. We have our problems internally, we help the people of Brazil with some projects, due to the pandemic. you [Benítez] He did the same in Paraguay, right next door. Some want to perpetuate those benefits, no one lives like this, it is the right way to fail, “said Bolsonaro, referring to the president of Paraguay, who was there.

On social media, the president also said that there is a risk of a blackout in Brazil, if nothing is done. Bolsonaro was referring to low water levels in hydroelectric dams.

Also recently, the president commented on a possible extension of aid speaking with supporters in front of the Planalto Palace. When asked by a supporter if the program would be expanded, the president replied: “Question for the virus.” Bolsonaro then added that the government is preparing for all scenarios, but “you have to wait for certain things to happen.”

Paulo Guedes, the government’s economy minister, has also opposed the idea of extending the program on several occasions. More recently, the minister affirmed that there is no probability or discussion on the issue in the government.

The emergency aid was created to pay three installments of R $ 600 to the most vulnerable workers. Later, it was expanded to two more installments of R $ 600. Finally, it was expanded to another four installments of R $ 300. In the latter case, not everyone has the right to payment. Only the five installments of R $ 600 are guaranteed to all those approved.
