The consortium formed by Tim, Vivo and Claro bought, on Monday afternoon (14), the assets of the mobile network of the operator Oi for R $ 16.5 billion. The auction was carried out by the 7th Business Court of Rio de Janeiro and is part of the company’s judicial reorganization plan that began in 2018.

With the result of the auction, Oi should disappear from the Brazilian mobile telephony market. Now it only owns the fiber infrastructure and assets, which have yet to be partially sold.

With the shutdown of Oi, the three telephony giants will continue to increase their share of the Brazilian mobile telephony market, which is now even more concentrated. Tim’s stake jumps from 23% to 32%, Vivo from 33% to 37% and Claro from 26% to 29%. The remaining 2% is divided between small regional operators.

This was Oi’s second asset auction to pay off its debts. The first was held on November 26 and attracted few interested parties. In it, the company’s telephone towers and data centers were sold for around R $ 1.4 billion.

Highline do Brasil, from the North American private equity group Digital Colony, bought the tower unit for R $ 1,067 billion, the only offer submitted for this asset. The data center unit was bought by Titan Venture Capital for R $ 325 million reais, also the only one presented in the auction.

Oi’s plan to sell its assets was announced on June 15 this year. At the time, the company said it would divide the company into four areas to sell. In the division, the assets were combined into Isolated Productive Units (UPI): Mobile Assets, Towers, Data Center and InfraCo.

UPI InfraCo brings together infrastructure and fiber assets and is not yet partially sold at auction, at a minimum price of R $ 6.5 billion. In the plan announced by Oi in January, the company said that the future buyer will have 51% of the voting capital.
