The Ministry of Health published on Sunday (12/13/2020) a video in which the executive secretary of the portfolio, Colonel Elcio Franco, harshly criticized the governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB). He asked the toucan “Do not play with the hope of thousands of Brazilians, do not sell dreams that you cannot fulfill”.
Watch the video (8min16s):
The secretary also said that the matter “It cannot be polarized for speeches with personal promotions or political interests.” Franco also claimed that Doria “He was wrong, perhaps due to ignorance of the Brazilian health regulatory framework.”
The toucan said it will only comment on the video in a press release this Monday (December 14), at 12:45 pm.
Elcio Franco also said that “It would be irresponsible” set the vaccination start date “Because it depends on registration with a regulatory agency, as we will only know full safety when phase 3 clinical studies are completed.”
The folder was convened by the STF (Supreme Federal Court) this Sunday (December 13) to reveal a vaccination start date. You have 48 hours to comply with the determination.
Understand the case
Doria indicated that vaccination begins on January 25, 2021 in the State of São Paulo with CoronaVac, an immunizer developed in partnership with the Chinese laboratory Sinovac and the Butantan Institute. The vaccine is in the final phase of testing and has not yet applied for registration with Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency).
The federal government even signaled the purchase of 46 million doses of the substance, but President Bolsonaro prohibited the decision. This Sunday, Elcio Franco affirmed that the acquisition of CoronaVac is a possibility, but that it will only occur after the approval of Anvisa:
“I would also like to clarify that the vaccine announced by Butantan, the largest supplier of vaccines to the Ministry of Health, when it is registered and approved by Anvisa, confirming its safety and efficacy conditions, will also be acquired and added to the National Vaccination Plan against covidity. . 19 “, said the secretary.
Vaccine record
Anvisa is in charge of certifying new drugs and vaccines in the country. According to the secretary, “None of the laboratories that are conducting phase 3 in Brazil has submitted an order [de registro] in Anvisa ”.
In the case of vaccines against covid-19, there are two possibilities. The first is the formal registry, which allows mass vaccination and commercialization of immunizers. It can only be awarded after completing all clinical trials.
The second possibility is authorization for emergency use. It allows the vaccine, even in the testing phase, to be applied to specific groups of the population.
Anvisa only grants authorization, either for registration or emergency use, to laboratories that request it.
Vaccination in Brazil
The Ministry of Health published the covid-19 vaccination plan on Saturday (December 12). Estimates apply 108 million doses in 4 stages, for priority groups.
The document does not specify the brand of vaccines to be used or establish deadlines. The absence of these specifications is justified by the fact that no immunizer has an authorization from Anvisa.
