RIO – The elected mayor of Río Eduardo Paes, who will only assume the management of the municipality on January 1, made an appeal this Sunday for the high number of cases and deaths from Covid-19 in the city. He asked people in the group at risk of contracting the disease, especially the elderly, to avoid going outside. Paes cited the recent death of friends, such as Bishop Daniel Malafaia and Samba player Ubirany Félix do Nascimento, one of the founders of the Fundo de Quintal group, both from complications derived from the coronavirus.

Cases: Rio Reports Nearly 700 New Covid-19 Infections; queuing for an ICU bed has 270 patients

—People must understand that, every day, we lose many lives, people are hospitalized. That depends a lot on the attitude of each one of us, regardless of the restrictions created by the government – said Paes, after meeting with his future secretariat. – My call now as mayor-elect is that the elderly do not leave home, stay, do not keep in touch, this is essential. People with comorbidity, with diseases, care.

Paes also said that, in the next meeting with the future secretaries, even before taking office, he will already present the plan to combat Covid-19, together with doctor Daniel Soranz, who will assume the municipality’s health department in the new administration. .

The future mayor said that he will fulfill his role in the face of the worsening of the pandemic and the lack of beds, working with the Ministry of Health and in an integrated manner with the National Immunization Plan. But he drew attention to the need for everyone to collaborate, including the youngest:

– All of us and the youngest, who may already be contaminated, must wear a mask, ensure social distance. It is useless to think that a government will enter on January 1 and perform miracles, or impose a series of restrictions that, if the population does not cooperate, are worth nothing.

On Sunday, agents of the Special Tourist Support Police reinforced surveillance at tourist spots such as the Pan de Azúcar Cable Car, in Urca, and Corcovado, in Cosme Velho. In addition to preventing non-compliance with sanitary regulations, the objective of the operation was to prevent flannels from charging R $ 80 to R $ 90, instead of R $ 2, for rotating parking lots. In the morning, 10 suspects were taken to the police station.

With the heavy rains on Sunday, the beaches became emptier, as well as the leisure areas of the South Zone, which closed again. Only in the landfill was it possible to see people taking the risk of running between cars. There were few towing operations in the waterfront, where parking is prohibited. The largest movement was at Posto 6, where the military organized a long line of people to visit the Copacabana Fort.
