Man who assaulted a couple on suspicion of covid-19: ‘I lost control’

“It was seconds in which I completely lost control. I made a mistake and I am very sorry,” said the man who attacked a client in a Curitiba restaurant this week, accusing him of being with Covid-19.

“All the terrible circumstances that we have lived through and the fear, at this time when the ICUs are full, culminated in that moment of great stress, when I had a totally unusual reaction,” he added. He spoke through his attorneys in a note sent to the Twitter.

The man, who did not want to be identified, apologizes “deeply for what happened” and claims to have been provoked. “With so many millions of people in the world dying, losing a job, going into depression and committing suicide, this guy has no right to joke about it,” he said.

The Civil Police investigates the crime of bodily injury. The two couples involved in the incident have already been identified and should be heard next week, just as the restaurant’s security circuit should be used in the investigation.

According to the police press office, the attacked couple already showed interest in continuing to represent the delegate responsible for the case, from the 11th Police District of Curitiba.

What the restaurant says

Penalties for non-compliance

This week, the Curitiba City Council approved a package of sanctions for lack of respect for measures to combat covid-19 for individuals and companies. According to the project, the fines can vary from R $ 150 to R $ 150 thousand and, in the case of commercial establishments, there may be seizure, interdiction and revocation of the commercial license.

For not wearing a mask, the penalty ranges from R $ 150 to R $ 550 and, in the event of non-compliance with home isolation determined by a health professional, the fine starts at R $ 550 and reaches R $ 1,550. According to the project, the inspection can be carried out by municipal officials, public bodies and indirect administration entities, and can be supported by the Military and Civil Police. The project has not yet been sanctioned by the city of Curitiba.

Since the start of the pandemic, Paraná has registered 320,000 cases and 6,642 deaths, according to the state Health Secretariat until yesterday. In Curitiba, there are 93,951 records of the disease and 1,924 deaths.
