According to the Romanian newspaper “ProSport”, the referee contacted his family after the game to explain his version of what happened.
“I’m just trying to be a good person. I won’t read anything that will be out in the press for the next few days. Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a racist. It is what I hope, at least ”, Colțescu would have said in the conversation with relatives.

The confusion started when Brazilian defender Rafael from Istanbul was sanctioned with a yellow card. Members of the Turkish team complained a lot about the punishment. At that time, according to a report by Romanian journalists, the fourth official Sebastian Coltescu called the head judge, Ovidiu Hategan, and asked Pierre Webó for punishment. He said the following:
“That nigga over there. Go there and see who it is. That nigga over there. You can’t do that, “Coltescu told Hategan, referring to the Cameroonian from the Istanbul technical committee.
Webó rebelled and questioned Coltescu several times: “What did you say? Why did you say black?” The main referee, Ovidiu Hategan, approached and sanctioned the Cameroonian. From then on, the outrage of the Istanbul Basaksehir technical committee members and reserves grew.

After the confusion, the two teams left the Parque dos Princes stadium turf midway through the first half. The match will resume this Wednesday, at 2:55 p.m. (Brasilia time), starting at minute 13, with a new referee team, led by Dutch Danny Makkelie.
Tuesday’s head referee, Ovidiu Haţegan, also Romanian, was contacted by the French website “Europe1”. He said he could not make any statement before consulting UEFA: “Normally I would like to give an answer, but I cannot. We are obviously heartbroken, but I ask you to respect our silence and understand the situation.”
Sebastien Colțescu has been on the FIFA board of directors since 2006. He serves in the Champions League primarily as a fourth official. This season he has worked in matches between Shakhtar Donetsk and Real Madrid (2-0), Atalanta and Liverpool (0-5), and Dynamo Kiev and Juventus (0-2). The last time he led a match was in July 2019, the confrontation between Siroki Brijeg and Kairat Almaty, for the Europa League.
The Romanian Football Federation (FRF), for its part, issued a note on Wednesday stating that it had knowledge of what happened during the Champions League match and repudiated any racist and xenophobic statement or action. The federation hopes that the result of the UEFA analysis “will know exactly what happened and take appropriate action.”
