The health plan is inconsistent and Brazil was slow to look for Pfizer

The governor of Maranhão, Flávio Dino (PCdoB), today criticized the conduct of the Ministry of Health in the negotiations for the development of a national vaccination plan against covid-19. For him, the actions of the federal government have been inconsistent and led to the announcement by the São Paulo government of a state immunization program.

“We cannot depend on the spirit of the President of the Republic. My perception is this: the federal government has not advanced, there is no consistency in the actions that were discussed. If the Health Ministry had kept the October decision, we would not be in this impasse, “Dino said in an interview with GloboNews.

The “October decision” mentioned by the governor is the agreement signed between the Ministry of Health and the São Paulo government to buy 46 million doses of CoronaVac, a vaccine developed by the Butantan Institute with the pharmaceutical company Sinovac Life Science. The agreement was suspended by President Jair Bolsonaro (no party) the next day.

Dino, who participated in a meeting with the Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello, and other governors, also assessed that the federal government was wrong to bet on a single vaccine -the one developed by the AstraZeneca laboratory in partnership with the University of Oxford-, by not looking for alternatives like Pfizer / BioNTech.

“The federal government took a long time to contact Pfizer. A strategy error, denying the correct decision, which is the multiplicity of vaccinations No it’s because Bolsonaro chose AstraZeneca that we can stick with that. It is necessary to have less ideological prejudice and more technique and sense of priority, ”he said.

He also cited the start of vaccination in the UK, which does not use the AstraZeneca / Oxford immunizer, but Pfizer’s, which was first released for emergency use.

“Even in the UK, which is the country of origin for the Brazilian government’s preferred vaccine, the vaccine is not being used [AstraZeneca/Oxford] up to this point. This preference, which I do not want to judge if it is correct or incorrect, is apparently making it difficult to find other alternatives, “he added.

No criticism of Doria

Unlike other governors, Dino avoided criticizing João Doria (PSDB) after the announcement of the start of vaccination in São Paulo, scheduled for January 25. For the governor of Maranhão, the toucan is using the resources it has to immunize its population and there is no problem with that, but it would be best to seek a national understanding.

“I think he [Doria] It is fighting because it has the Butantan Institute, and I hope that the response of the Ministry of Health is not to fight and defeat the government of São Paulo. The right thing to do is to seek understanding. What the federal government cannot do is choose a vaccine and discard the Butantan vaccine for ideological reasons, possibly because it does not like China or does not like Doria. Everyone has the right to that, what they do not have the right to is to sacrifice the health of the population ”, he defended.
