BRASILIA – Near the end of the year, the Ministry of Health has not yet decided on the purchases of supplies, including syringes and needles, necessary for vaccination against Covid-19. The inaction of the pasta generated an alert in the industry that produces equipment for the health area, which fears that it will not have enough time to meet the demand for pasta, since the lack of details on the immunization strategy has made it difficult to business planning. An order for this type of product could take up to 90 days to complete, delaying the vaccination campaign.

– This is a vaccination campaign that has never occurred before, in a national and simultaneous dimension, if we imagine that up to four vaccines are approved, there will be a very concentrated period. This makes the industry need a different schedule than the regular supply service – said the president of the Brazilian Association of the High Technology Industry of Health Products (Abimed), Fernando Silveira.

Last week, the Ministry said it was in the process of buying 300 million syringes and needles in the domestic market for dosing purposes, and another 40 million in the international market.

Silveira says that, although it is not possible to know what type of syringe would need to be produced before defining the type of vaccine to be applied, the paste could work with different scenarios, taking into account immunizers in more advanced stages of development.

– Although there is no clear definition of which vaccines will be adopted in the country, approved by Anvisa, the health authorities have technical knowledge of the types of vaccines that are in phase 3 and that are being applied in other countries – Silveira argues. – There is a notion of what these possible vaccines are. Therefore, we understand that the PNI (National Immunization Program) could already indicate with some precision what would be the real needs regarding the type of syringe (to be used), quantities and delivery time so that the industry can organize itself.

According to him, the usual period for the manufacture of syringes is 20 to 30 days, but depending on the size of the order to be made, it may end up increasing, so it would take 60 to 90 days to complete production. . According to Silveira, the ideal would be for the ministry to have a detailed vaccination strategy and the necessary supplies in October or November.

However, as vaccination must be carried out in stages, Silveira also says that it is not possible to say with certainty that there will be a delay in the production and delivery of inputs.

– It depends on how the vaccination phase will be. But we always start from the premise that purchases will be made in expressive volumes and, for this to fit into the production process, the sooner this announcement is launched and the negotiations conclude, the more confident we will be to find ourselves in the correct period.
