President Jair Bolsonaro said on Monday 7 through social networks that the vaccine against covid-19 that is certified in Brazil will be distributed free of charge and will not be mandatory. According to him, the immunizer that has the validation of the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) will be distributed to the entire population with the guarantee that there will be no lack of government resources for it.

“In case of certification by Anvisa (scientific guidelines and legal precepts), the Brazilian government will offer the vaccine to the entire population free of charge and not compulsory. According to the Ministry of Economy, there will be no shortage of resources for everyone to be cared for, ”Bolsonaro wrote on his official Facebook page on Monday.

The publication includes a photo of the president together with Minister Paulo Guedes, of the Economy, and the Attorney General of the Union, José Levi. “Health and Economy hand in hand for life,” Bolsonaro added at the end of the text. Guedes was in Planalto this afternoon for a meeting with Bolsonaro.

This Monday, the governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB), announced that vaccination against covid-19 will begin on January 25 in the state. In Bolsonaro’s political defiance, Doria initially plans to vaccinate the elderly, health professionals, indigenous people, and quilombolas with Coronavac, developed by the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac and produced in association with the São Paulo government’s Butantã Institute.

The application still depends on the results of the effectiveness of the vaccine, which has not yet been produced, and the registration in Anvisa. In previous statements, Bolsonaro opposed a vaccine of Chinese origin on the grounds of “discrediting” the country where the new coronavirus originated. The CEO is also in favor of optional immunization and has already stated that he will not take any type of immunization because he has already contracted covid-19.

At a press conference today, Doria criticized the deadline set by the Ministry of Health for the start of the vaccination campaign. The folder foresees the start of immunization in March 2021 and the vaccine used must be that of the University of Oxford / AstraZeneca.
