An 8-year-old boy, diagnosed with Covid-19 in serious condition, was transferred this Sunday 6 from a UPA in Itaperuna, in the Northwest of Rio de Janeiro, to the Jesús Municipal Hospital, in Vila Isabel, North Zone of the city of Rio passing through Campos dos Goycatazes to board a Brazilian Navy plane.

The ground operation was in charge of the Military Fire Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CBMERJ), which had two advanced ambulances with an intensive care unit (ICU) and medical personnel.

Upon arrival at Santos Dumont airport, the patient was transferred to the Jesús Municipal Hospital, in Vila Isabel, in the North Zone. According to the government of Rio, the trip concluded successfully around 10 at night.

– Today it rained in the state of Rio and we were left homeless to take the flight. I immediately requested air support, due to the seriousness of the case – said the Secretary of State for Civil Defense and commander general of CBMERJ, Colonel Leandro Monteiro.

According to Colonel Leandro Monteiro, the boy was taken by ambulance to Campos and there he boarded the aircraft due to bad weather that prevented him from landing in the city of origin.

– The State of Rio bought an Augusta helicopter in Italy, which flies by instruments, but the pandemic delayed delivery. It would be ideal to do the rescue – added Colonel Monteiro.

The request was later answered by the command of the 1st Naval District, which sent a plane from São Pedro da Aldeia, in the Lagos Region.

The Fluminense corporation needed support due to the need to operate a helicopter equipped with an ICU.

Initially, a joint operation was planned with the Minas Gerais Military Fire Department (CBMMG) to carry out the transfer. The CBMMG press office had reported, at 6:30 p.m., that the teams were already positioned, hoping only that the patient could pilot the helicopter.

The mining corporation explained that the orientation had been given by the doctor from the Mobile Emergency Service after an evaluation so that the trip could take place when “the respiratory parameters” stabilized.
