Military personnel from the Fire Department ended the third day of searches without finding the 8-year-old boy who disappeared in the Anhanduí River, in Jardim Ouro Preto, during the storm last Friday (4).
On Sunday (6), neighbors and relatives joined a working group to locate the boy, but without success. Teams of firefighters had been at the scene since 6 a.m. Sunday.
As happened this Saturday, the military searched along the course of the river, already a few kilometers from the point where the child was carried by the waters. The concrete structure that can be seen above was the last place relatives saw the boy.
Residents of the region say that the two concrete structures are generally used by residents to cross from one side of the river to the other.
The boy’s relatives say that he, 3 more siblings and his mother visited an uncle in the neighborhood on Friday. During the visit, the boys asked their uncle to go fishing on the banks of the river. With the storm and the large amount of rain that fell in the city, the water level rose rapidly and took the uncle and the children by surprise. The man managed to save his nephews, except for those under 8 years old, who have not been found so far.
Since Friday night, family members have been watching on the banks of the river. This morning, several relatives gathered to pray before embarking on a new search for the boy.
With the river level down on Sunday, the expectation is that both the military and the voluntary work group made up of family, friends and neighbors will be able to “sweep” a larger section, since the river banks are freer. .
