SAO PAULO – This Thursday (3), the same day that CoronaVac supplies arrived in São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB), governor of São Paulo, announced that vaccination against Covid-19 begins in January in the state.
CoronaVac is the Covid-19 vaccine developed by the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac in association with the Butantan Institute. It is one of the most advanced immunizers today in terms of development (you know of other vaccines in an advanced stage of development).
To date, only four vaccines in the world, of the ten that are in phase three testing, the last before approval, have shown efficacy results: the Pfizer vaccine in association with BioNTech (95% effective); that of Moderna (94% effective); that of Oxford in partnership with Astra Zeneca (up to 90% effective, but with later questioned results) and the Sputinik V vaccine, from the Russian laboratory Gamaleya (92% effective).
At a press conference at the Palácio dos Bandeirantes, the governor stated that the state currently has just over one million doses. Until the first half of January, São Paulo will have 46 million doses, enough to immunize practically half the state, considering the two-dose application regimen and the population of approximately 45 million inhabitants.
Doria also said that he hopes CoronaVac will not be limited to São Paulo and questioned the vaccination deadline presented by the Ministry of Health. The folder has the prospect of starting vaccination against the disease in March 2021 and ending the campaign only in December, when there would be enough doses to immunize the entire population.
“If the Ministry of Health has judgment and competence, São Paulo can offer the CoronaVac vaccine to other states. I put on record my outrage at the federal government’s announcement that vaccination would begin only in March. If we can do it in January, why start in March? Doria asked.
The governor pointed out that São Paulo will initiate immunization “responsibly, following the law and complying with the protocols of the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa)” and announced that it will announce the plan next Monday (7). vaccination for the application of CoronaVac.
Amid criticism about how the federal government has been leading the fight against the pandemic in Brazil, Doria said he hopes that the Butantan vaccine will be included in the National Immunization Program (PNI), and will otherwise start vaccination in São Paul. anyway.
“I ask if the members of the federal government do not see the fact that we have more than 500 Brazilians who die every day in Brazil. Are we going to lose another 60,000 lives waiting until March? In São Paulo, we will not wait until March and we will not bury more Brazilians, ”said the governor.
The vaccine still needs Anvisa’s approval
For the vaccine to be used in the country, it is necessary for the immunizer to be authorized by Anvisa, after the agency has analyzed various parameters of the vaccine (see some authorization rules). One of the aspects evaluated involves the levels of effectiveness, which are still unknown in the case of CoronaVac.
But, as Dimas Covas, director of the Butantan Institute, explains, CoronaVac already has the complete registration file sent to the agency. The effectiveness data will be published in early December.
“Until December 15 we will have the presentation of the results of the effectiveness of CoronaVac. CoronaVac is the first vaccine produced here in Brazil and it should be the first vaccine that can be used, ”said Covas.
Still, according to Covas, the Butantan Institute will not request emergency approval for the vaccine, as it must request the definitive registration of the immunizer.
“All vaccines that have been shown to be safe and effective should be included in the PNI [Programa Nacional de Imunização]. Only then will we be able to vaccinate Brazilians in Brazil, and not just Brazilians in São Paulo. Butantan is from Brazil and also CoronaVac ”, added Jean Gorinchteyn, Secretary of State for Health.
