At least two people died and 15 others were injured after being run over in a pedestrian zone in the city of Trier, in western Germany, this Tuesday (1st).

Local authorities confirmed the arrest of a suspect, a 51-year-old man from the region, and asked residents to avoid the city center.

“We arrested a person and they impounded a car,” the Trier police department said on social media. “Two people were killed in a first investigation. Please avoid the city center.”

The city’s mayor, Wolfram Leibe, is at the scene of the coup and said in an SWR radio interview that there are serious cases among the 15 injured.

“We are evaluating the situation,” said Leibe, still without giving any indication of the reasons for the hit-and-run. “We have ambulances from all over the region supporting us. Our first task is to make sure everyone is safe.”

Witnesses told the local newspaper “Trierischer Volksfreund” that a dark gray Range Rover invaded the area at high speed and that some people were thrown by the impact. The city center is isolated and helicopters are present.

The coup occurred between the central square and a shopping street, according to the newspaper. The car would have entered through Porta Nigra, the historical monument of the city, and would have followed the streets with controlled vehicle traffic.
