Pulmonologist Marcelo Rabahi, who has been monitoring the health of Goiânia mayor-elect Maguito Vilela (MDB), said the patient can undergo a test to see if he can breathe without the aid of devices. According to the doctor, this evaluation should be done between Monday (30) and Tuesday (1 °).

Maguito is admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Albert Einsten Hospital, in São Paulo (SP). He was hospitalized in Goiânia almost 40 days ago, after being diagnosed with Covid-19, and then he was transferred to São Paulo to continue treatment.

The politician had been sedated since the first round of the elections, but, according to his son and president of the state party, Daniel Vilela (MDB), the sedation was reduced on Sunday (29) and Maguito shed tears when he was informed that he had been elected. However, due to the type of sedative, it is possible that, hours later, you no longer remember receiving the news.

Maguito Vilela was elected mayor of Goiânia with 52% of the valid votes.

Rabahi has been monitoring the health situation of the mayor-elect since the beginning of the hospitalization. According to him, Maguito has shown progressive improvement in recent days.

“Yesterday’s exams were very good. We are deciding whether to perform the 12-hour test without ECMO [membrana externa ao corpo que ajuda na respiração] today or tomorrow. For a week he has needed the machine only to eliminate carbon dioxide, that is, there are days when he can inhale oxygen without help, “he explained.

The doctor explained that the inflammation in Maguito’s lung is what has kept him hospitalized and that “there are signs that he is recovering” from this condition.

Still according to the specialist, Maguito is sedated, but, as usual, he has a few moments to wake up, still unconscious. Also, due to shortness of breath, the patient is undergoing hemodialysis, which can be stopped as soon as he is discharged from ECMO.

“He has continuous hemodialysis, but he has no kidney damage. As the acidity of the blood can be balanced, ECMO and dialysis can also be eliminated, ”he added.

The politician tested positive for coronavirus on October 20. Two days later, he was admitted to a hospital in Goiânia.

On October 27, he was diagnosed with up to 75% inflammation in the lungs and an alert for the critical level of oxygen saturation in the blood. That same day he was transferred to São Paulo.

On October 30, Maguito was intubated for the first time after his respiratory condition worsened. On November 8, he resumed breathing without the equipment. The politician got worse and returned to mechanical ventilation on November 15, Election Day. Two days later, the candidate began respiratory treatment with ECMO.

In August of this year, Maguito lost two sisters to Covid-19 in less than 10 days. They were 82 and 76 years old and lived in Jataí, the politician’s hometown located in the southwest of Goiás.
